Staff Selection Commission Constable (General Duty) in CAPFs, SSF, Assam Rifles and Sepoy in NCB

Recruits Constables (General Duty) for the Central Armed Police Forces (BSF, CISF, CRPF, ITBP, SSB), the Secretariat Security Force (SSF) and Assam Rifles (as Rifleman), and Sepoys for the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).

Eligibility

Class 10 (Matriculation) pass. Candidates must be 18-23 years old on the reference date (1 January for the recruitment year), with SC/ST (5 years), OBC (3 years) and ex-servicemen relaxations. Physical standards also apply: generally a height of 170 cm for men and 157 cm for women, with regional relaxations, and a chest of 80/85 cm for men. Both men and women may apply.

Age limit: 18-23 years (relaxations as per rules)

Exam pattern

A 60-minute computer-based exam of 80 MCQs worth 160 marks. There are four sections of 20 questions each: Reasoning, General Knowledge, Elementary Mathematics, and English or Hindi. Each correct answer earns 2 marks and each wrong answer loses 0.25 marks. The exam is offered in English, Hindi and 13 regional languages. NCC certificate holders get bonus marks (A +2, B +3, C +5). Shortlisted candidates take the PET: a 5 km run in 24 minutes for men or 1.6 km in 8.5 minutes for women. The PST, a detailed medical examination and document verification follow.

Syllabus at a glance

Class 10-level arithmetic (percentage, ratio, profit and loss, time and work, mensuration), basic verbal and non-verbal reasoning, General Knowledge (history, geography, polity, economy, science, sports, current affairs), and elementary English or Hindi grammar and comprehension.

How toppers play it

With only 0.25 marks lost per wrong answer against +2 per correct one, attempting all 80 questions is usually worthwhile. Leave only questions you have no idea about.
Reasoning and maths are where scores separate candidates. Aim for 18+ of 20 in each, then use General Knowledge previous-year questions to clear sectional comfort levels.
Start running training months before the CBT result. The 5 km in 24 minutes (men) is a strict pass/fail test held within weeks of the result.
Get an NCC certificate verified if you have one; the bonus of up to 5 marks matters at GD cut-off margins.
Check the height, chest and medical standards against your own measurements before applying, since PST rejection is common.
